Angela Merkel defeated her main opponent in the televised debates

The German Chancellor strengthened her position before the upcoming elections.

According to Deutsche Welle, the polls after the televised debates between Merkel and the Social Democrat candidate Martin Schultz brought the chancellor of Germany 55%: 35%. In the opinion of the participants of the Infratest dimap poll, Merkel was more confident than her opponent during the discussion of a number of topics.

44% preferred the German Chancellor to the issue of migration policy and refugees, while Schultz was supported by 39% of respondents. Merkel's statements on the foreign policy agenda of Berlin were more convincing by 61% of those who voted. Preference to her rival was given to 30% of the survey participants. When discussing the situation on the labor market, the audience also awarded the Chancellor of Germany (45% vs. 40%).

Relations with Moscow, the annexation of Russia by the Crimea and the conflict in the east of Ukraine were not discussed. Only in one issue did the positions of the Federal Chancellor and the head of the Social Democrats unite: they sharply condemned the plans of former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder to take up his post on the board of directors of the Russian concern Rosneft. According to Angela Merkel, these actions of the ex-chancellor "undermine the sanctions that the European Union has imposed."
