Mindanao Muslim and Christian religious leaders in a joint statement following the dialogue for peace, asserted that the continuing struggle in the region results not from religious differences but rather from radicalism.
“Marawi dramatizes for us three interconnected challenges to peace in Mindanao: violent extremism and terrorism; the uncertainties of the implementation of the political peace process; and the crucial role of religious leaders and communities in the rebuilding and development of Marawi,” said the joint statement signed by several religious figures in Mindanao as quoted by state-run Philippine News Agency.
The statement was signed by Archbishop Antonio Ledesma, Marawi Bishop Most Reverend Edwin de la Peña, Marawi resident Mona Liza Pangan, Hayatul Ulama secretary general Dr. Said Zamahsari Salendab, Regional Darul Ifta in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Dr. Ustadz Abdulmuhmin Maujahid, international relations of the Community of Sant’Egidio head Dr. Mauro Garofalo, and Peoples and Religions secretary general Prof. Alberto Quattruci.
It insisted that the long-drawn battle in Marawi following a botched arrest of the alleged appointed Daesh “emir” in Southeast Asia Isnilon Hapilon, it did not arise from religious differences but from violent extremism.
“The many stories of mutual assistance between Muslims and Christians attest to the rejection of this evil. These stories of solidarity likewise attest to the Filipinos’ sense of sharing a common humanity with anyone in need, regardless of creed or community," the statement said.
It also urged the inclusion of “peace education at all levels in our schools, madaris and communities” as well as Inter-faith and intra-faith dialogues in order to inhibit a better understanding and appreciation of the cultural differences, hence, enhance cooperation.
“We need to build a culture of peace based on personal integrity, respect for human rights, inter-cultural dialogue, care for the environment, peaceful coexistence and eradication of poverty,” it added.
The leaders committed to reach out to the youth who they believe hold a renewed vision towards building the future of Mindanao communities.
