Ukraine: Crimeans do not have the right to call in the Russian army

The state-occupier, whom even the UN General Assembly recognized Russia, is even forbidden to agitate the local population for voluntary admission to the army

The Russian Federation has no right to forcefully call upon the inhabitants of the annexed peninsula Crimea and the city of Sevastopol to serve in the armed forces.

A corresponding statement was published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, expressing strong protest over the Kremlin's intention to hold an autumn appeal in Crimea.

The UN General Assembly confirmed the fact of illegal occupation of the Crimea by the Russian Federation, the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine stressed, also stressing that, according to international law, it is prohibited to coerce persons living under occupation to serve in the armed or auxiliary forces and even to propagate the population in favor of voluntary admission to the army.

The thematic report of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights highlights the persecution of Crimean residents by Russian authorities for refusing to serve in the army.

"We have to admit another gross violation of our international obligations by the Russian Federation," the Foreign Ministry noted.

The Foreign Ministry demanded that the appeal be immediately abolished in the occupied territory, that international obligations as an occupying state be observed, and that the resolutions of the UN General Assembly concerning the peninsula be fully implemented.

Earlier, Ukrainian activists explained why the pseudo-referendum of 2014 on the annexed peninsula has nothing to do with the people's right to self-determination.
