On October 25, at the Knesset plenary meeting, a bill on the national character of the State of Israel was discussed in the first reading of the bill submitted by MP Tzipi Livni with the support of the Zionist Camp.
The bill proposed by Livni said: "Israel is a national state of the Jewish people with equal rights for all citizens."
Against the bill voted 62 parliamentarians and only 36 supported it.
The leader of the A-Tnua party, Tzipi Livni, said that MPs who voted against the bill, in fact, voted against the Declaration of Independence.
"The State of Israel must be the national center of the Jewish people, the country of the Jewish people with equal rights for all citizens."
