Barzani calls on Baghdad to agree to dialogue

The Kurdish Prime Minister on Thursday received the new Swedish Ambassador to Iraq, Pontus Melander, and called on the international community to pressure Baghdad into stopping its military operations on the Kurdistan Region.

Kanal24 reports citing Kurdistan 24 that Melander expressed his concern regarding the current conflicts between Erbil and Baghdad, and hoped that both sides would resolve their differences through dialogue, according to the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) press office.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani? stated that the recent tensions and clashes had resulted in civilian deaths, and led to the displacement of tens of thousands.

He also added that the borders between the KRG and the Federal Government of Iraq’s are quite unstable.

Barzani mentioned that the Kurdistan Region has called for dialogue with Baghdad to resolve the current disputes.

The Kurdish Premier called on the international community to pressure Baghdad to put an end to its military activities against the Kurdistan Region, and to lay ground for a serious dialogue between the KRG and the federal government.

Barzani emphasized that the KRG had even offered to freeze the results of the Sep. 25 referendum on independence as a concrete step toward halting clashes between Erbil and Baghdad.

Despite Erbil's proposal, Baghdad announced it would only accept the full cancellation of the results as a pre-condition to initiate dialogue.
