The Minister for Jerusalem Affairs, Zeev Elkin, suggested that several Arab neighborhoods separated from the rest of the city by a security wall be removed from the jurisdiction of the capital's municipality.
Elkin said that at the present time there is an intolerable situation in which, on the one hand, neither the municipal authorities nor the police are able to fully control the situation in these quarters, on the other hand, there is uncontrolled migration of Arab residents from them to the "big Jerusalem". According to Elkin, such a reality arose because of the "strange decision to build a protective wall inside the city," and not along its municipal borders.
At the same time, Elkin stressed that there is no question about any section of Jerusalem, and these Arab neighborhoods will continue to be under Israeli sovereignty, but under the jurisdiction of another municipal structure
